FORTY ONE

Age of Frost: And Then There Were...

“Get behind us, Yuri,” Kolya said as he activated his annihilator.

Yuri obeyed and moved behind and in between Kolya and Marina. He would never have admitted it, but the monstrous form of the Shadow trooper in front of them terrified him to no end.

The Shadow trooper stood motionless, backlit by the blazing inferno that he’d set off in the forest. His body continued to repair the damage the decomposition field was inflicting. He was clearly winning, and soon he’d be whole again. His eyes strobed a brilliant white light, blinding anyone who dared to look him in the face.

Marina noted to herself that he looked almost nothing like the trooper she’d fought, and lost to, outside of the gardens. He’d changed, become bigger and stronger somehow. The armor, while uneven in places, looked thick and formidable. They were going to lose this fight, she realized.

Glancing at Kolya sideways, Marina gave him a quick nod. He understood and sighed heavily. The time was now, he knew, before the beast was able to regenerate completely.

Marina moved and blinked out too fast for anyone to trace. An explosion bounced off the trooper’s armor, and he barely registered it.

Kolya moved and disappeared as well, leaving the nervous Yuri standing alone, facing the trooper himself. He swallowed hard.

Another explosion, larger this time, rocked the trooper back on his heels. His chest glowed red and he took a step back. His balance caught, he glanced to the right and then slowly to the left. A motion caught Yuri’s attention—a quick flicker of light out of the corner of his eye.

Kolya collided with the trooper at full speed, trying to smash his extended annihilator into the trooper’s face. The Shadow soldier saw him coming and parried the weapon with his armored forearm.

Marina flashed in from out of nowhere and brought down her weapon, now transformed into a curved blade. The trooper caught the blade in his hand without looking. He turned slowly to face Marina and snapped the blade in half.

He was fast. Faster than Marina. Faster than all of them.

In a blink of an eye, the trooper smashed his elbow into Kolya’s visor, and as Marina’s attack momentum was dropping her to the ground, the trooper reversed his arm and landed an earthshaking uppercut into her stomach. A bright flash of light at the point of contact and Marina was sent flying into the air. She’d sailed a short distance and smashed into a massive ice structure. The impact buried her deep into the ice.

The trooper continued his motion, which brought him back to face Kolya, who was barely recovering from the hit to his face. The trooper grabbed Kolya’s neck with both hands, bent him over and smashed his spiked knee into knight’s face.

His visor shattered into pieces and Kolya fell backward onto the ground. Another explosion knocked the trooper down to his knees. Yuri shot a look up at the ice structures, but Marina was no longer there.
